DECT Standard Cipher security analysis

We analyzed the DECT Standard Cipher (DSC) for its security. The main results are:

  • The DSC design is similar to the A5/1 design
  • The DSC designers managed to counter a lot of attack which have been found on A5/1
  • DSC has a higher implementation cost in gates and space than A5/1
  • However, the number of initialization rounds (40 for DSC) is much lower than for A5/1 (100 rounds for A5/1)
  • This makes a correlation attack on DSC possible, which can recover a Key on a fast PC or Server in minutes to hours, if 215 or more keystreams for DSC are known

The results have been submitted and accepted to FSE2010. You can download the paper here.
